Comparative Analysis of Intermediate-Task Training and Continuous Pretraining for Zero-Shot Cross-Lingual Transfer on XTREME-R
Abstract
Abstract: Intermediate-task training—fine-tuning a pretrained model on an intermediate task before fine-tuning again on the target task—often improves model performance substantially on language understanding tasks in monolingual English settings. We investigate whether English intermediate-task training is still helpful on non-English target tasks. Using nine intermediate language-understanding tasks, we evaluate intermediate-task transfer in a zero-shot cross-lingual setting on the XTREME benchmark. We see large improvements from intermediate training on the BUCC and Tatoeba sentence retrieval tas
Research Question
How does the performance of intermediate-task training sequences compare to continuous pretraining on a multilingual corpus in zero-shot cross-lingual transfer on XTREME-R?

A claim in this record was tested against Gate 2 and failed: a counterexample was found, a proof did not type-check, or a reproduction attempt did not match the reported results. Evidence for the failure is attached to this record. VERIFIED requires an attached reproducible artifact (Lean4 proof source, or repro script and results) before this status can be set; it is not derived from review score or claim count.
